History
Christie's Education is owned by Christie's Auction House. Christie's Education was conceived in 1978 to promote the study of all aspects of the visual arts and the art market through hands-on experience of works of art and art-world practice.
Christie's Education London was originally based in South Kensington next to the Christie's salerooms as the Fine Arts Course. Due to expansion it relocated to the Building Crafts College at 153 Great Titchfield Street, London, where it introduced postgraduate programmes in European Art, Asian Art and Art, Law and Business at Master's and Postgraduate Diploma levels. A joint Undergraduate Master of Arts (MA Hons) degree in the History of Art and Art-world Practice was also offered in conjunction with the University of Glasgow where it had an affiliation with up until the 2016-17 academic year.
Christie's Education New York was established in 1993. It had originally occupied premises opposite the New York Public Library at 11 West 42nd Street until relocating to Rockefeller Centre in August 2016. It originally offered Master's programmes in Modern art and its Markets and Global Contemporary Art as well as a part-time Certificate Programme. Over time an Art Business course and Continuing Education programme was developed and has continued to expand.
Christie's Education Hong Kong first offered courses to coincide with the major international sales and fairs in the late 1990s. Over the years Christie's Education Hong Kong has expanded and formed partnerships to deliver joint-programme opportunities with the China Europe International Business School, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Yale Center Beijing and the University of Hong Kong.
In October 2017, Christie's Education launched Online Courses making the study of art history and the art market more accessible to students around the world. The digital platform has become Christie's Education's third pillar of learning, joining the Continuing Education programmes and Master's degrees as routes to gain deeper understanding of the art world, whether to further careers, enhance knowledge, or explore passions.
