Career
Liza Sylvestre is an award-winning artist that in 2014 received both the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and a Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Learning Grant. She uses a combination of both pen, ink, and paint, specifically acrylic paints and micron pens in her work. She uses unconventional materials to create textures in her pieces, such as chopsticks, cardboard, and fabric. In her early work she kept her line drawings created using pen separate from her acrylic paintings. Her later work is now mixed media, where she combines both drawing with painting. Her current work explores new media such as installation and video art, such as "What if I Told You a Story in a Language I Can Hear" in 2015 and "Standing in a Room Without Sound" In 2017. Her work has been shown in galleries across the United States, including New York, California, Oregon, New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Florida, as well as in Australia and Canada. Liza is a founder in Create Move Communicate, a program to help those with hearing disabilities to communicate using art. Liza and co-founders Angela Olson and Canae Weiss work with teachers and artists who have hearing disabilities from varying artistic fields and disciplines in this program. The Creating Language Through Arts program is supported by the Minnesota State Arts Board. This program works within the centers community of ArtiCulture, Four Seasons Elementary, and MN Hands & Voices.
